Nouns Suffixes          | Grammar Index |

One of the more charming aspects of Brazilian Portuguese is the ability to change the meaning of a noun by adding a suffix such as the diminutive -zinho/-inho (m), -zinha/-inha (f) or the grandizing -ão (m) or -ona (f). The use of these and other noun suffixes express a wide range of meanings and nuance in colloquial Brazilian Portuguese.

só = alone
sozinho = (a) little alone

bar = bar
barzinho = little bar

praia = beach
praião = big beach/main beach
